We have seen several posts on different pages regarding Senator Barry Finegold and his participation in our fight to save ATD and the company. We can fully understand and we appreciate, probably more than anybody, the desire to protect the grassroots nature of who we are and what we accomplished together. We made history through our firm resolve and desire to protect a culture that we love. We also feel a sense of unease anytime anybody tries to selfishly gain off of the efforts of others.
We do not believe this to be the case with Senator Finegold nor do we feel the bashing he is taking by some is warranted. Involving politicians in our cause was a hot button issue throughout the summer and any time we implored them for help a firestorm of comments was sure to follow. We took the position that we would welcome anyone who wished to help us Save Market Basket as we needed all the help we could get. We had many vendors support us on the lines and in front of stores and not once did we suspect ulterior motive. We did not look at them with cynicism that they were helping in order to gain favor or better sales positioning when we returned. We welcomed their support and we needed their support as they were stakeholders just like us. We believe the senator falls into a similar group and, among politicians, he was first on the scene to offer his help. He initiated a boycott with his peers and this act was one of many key events which helped us win. For his actions we will always be grateful, in the same way we are eternally grateful to anyone who fought alongside us with their words or actions.
We know he is up for election this coming Tuesday and we hope he wins. Had he not been there standing alongside us we would not be paying much attention to the race for Treasurer but now we have a friend in the race and we wish the best for him. He shops in our stores, he lives in our neighborhood, he spoke at our rallies, he started a boycott and we hope he wins the election. It’s as simple as that.
